As the world was hit with the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2020, VCU, like many other universities, switched to virtual learning. As students return to in-person classes, some realize that they actually preferred learning virtually.
Dorian Philpot, a VCU student, shared that she is not a vocal class participant in a face-to-face setting. "It was a little bit easier for me to find ways to participate in an online setting than it was in an in-person setting," she said.
According to the LA Business Journal, students prefer online school for a number of reasons. Online environments provide flexibility, accessibility, and less intimidation. "Online classes made it a little bit easier for me. Like not to feel so awkward about not having a question or like, if I did have a question, feeling a little bit more comfortable," shared another VCU student.
Commuting to in-person classes can also be a hassle for some students. Orrin Pullings stated, "You're driving down the city, gotta pay for parking. Your class could be at 9:00 AM. You gotta make it in the class. Teachers expecting you to be on time." Pullings found that asynchronous classes worked better with his schedule. "You are basically capable of doing your work on it at any time, do it when you have the time and you feel like you can do it," he said.
According to labusinessjournal.com, "Over 75% of colleges and universities in the U.S. offer online degree programs." VCU provides limited online programs for degrees and certificates. "I feel like that should be an option to have strictly just online," stated a VCU student.
Online learning is a better option for some students. "Some say it was less of a hassle and others say it was easier to ask questions and even participate," reported Jessica Johnson for VCU News.
