As more states across the U.S. continue to legalize marijuana for recreational use, Virginia has taken a major step forward in joining the ranks of states with legal marijuana sales. Governor Ralph Northam signed a bill on July 1, 2021, that legalized the use and possession of marijuana in the state. The law is set to go into effect on July 1, 2024, but that doesn't mean residents of Virginia will have to wait that long to legally purchase marijuana.
According to a recent announcement by the Virginia Marijuana Regulatory Commission, sales of recreational marijuana could begin as early as September of this year. The commission has been working diligently to establish regulations for the sale and use of marijuana in the state, and they are reportedly ahead of schedule in their efforts.
The commission has also stated that they plan to prioritize equity and social justice in the establishment of the legal marijuana market in Virginia. This includes ensuring that communities that were disproportionately affected by the war on drugs have a fair opportunity to participate in the legal marijuana industry.
However, it's important to note that marijuana is still illegal under federal law, and the sale and use of marijuana is still prohibited on a number of college and university campuses in Virginia. It's important for individuals to familiarize themselves with the laws and regulations regarding marijuana use in their specific area.
As always, we'll continue to keep you updated on any new developments in this story. For now, it looks like Virginians may soon have access to legal recreational marijuana sooner than expected.
